Following a historically autumnal 2020 edition, the Vuelta 2021 will recapture the August heat, as well as the south of the country that the organizers had been forced to abandon the previous year. It is worth mentioning that, on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of its construction, the race will start from the inside of the Cathedral of Burgos itself.
Competitors will face a high altitude course, with no less than seven summit finishes on the menu. While no Pyrenean pass is involved this time around, some never-before-attempted climbs like the Picon Blanco and the 1700-m high Gamoniteiru will be sure to stoke the flames of excitement.
Unusually, instead of the more traditional Madrid, it is in the city of Santiago de Compostela that the course will reach its conclusion. Perhaps metaphorically, since the city’s emblem is a scallop shell, for a challenger to come out of his own shell to topple two-time winner Roglic (2019 and 2020)?
