On Wednesday 17 June, UEFA confirmed that an unprecedented « Final 8 » would be held in Lisbon to complete the 2019-2020 Champions League edition. An exceptional location includes an exceptional format! The European body has decided to temporarily abandon the return games to adopt a knockout formula grouping all the qualified teams in the same city. Like the « Final Four » and « March Madness », popular in indoor sports, the last seven games of this Champions League will be played in two venues : the Estadio José Alvalade home of the Sporting Lisbon and the Estadio da Luz stadium of the Benfica, where the long awaited final will take place.
While four rounds of 16 games are still to be decided, eight teams will compete for the « Big ears » cup in Lisbon from 12th to 23rd August. The draw for this « August madness » will be held on the 12th July.
After a long weaning from European football, it is certain that this date of the 12th August has been ticked by all football fans around the world!
